Sometime we get a nice dream when sleeping, and the other times we get bad dreams. Islam teaches us some adabs (good behaviour) to do when we get bad dream.
In a hadith from Abu Qatadah (may Allah blesses him), that the Prophet (ﷺ) says:
الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ -وفي رواية: الرُّؤْيَا الحَسَنَةُ- من الله، والحُلُمُ من الشيطان، فمن رأى شيئًا يَكْرَهُهُ فَلْيَنْفُثْ عن شماله ثلاثا، وَلْيَتَعَوَّذْ من الشيطان؛ فإنها لا تضره
“A good vision (dream) is from Allah and a bad dream is from the Satan. He who sees something in a dream that he dislikes, should blow thrice on his left, must seek Allah’s Refuge from the evil of the Satan (i.e., by saying: A’udhu billahi minash-shaitanir rajim). Then it will not harm him” [al-Bukhari and Muslim].
The Prophet (ﷺ) says in this hadith, that a peaceful dream is part of the blessings of God upon His servants. And also a good news for the believers, warnings of the oblivious, and reminder of those who oppose.
The bad dream is from the devil, to confuse the soul of a person. Distorting him and frightening him. And bringing things that are gained by worry, grief, sadness, and sometimes sickness. Because Satan is the enemy of human. Satan loves when something bad happens to a person and makes him sad.
So, if a person sees in his sleep something that annoys him, frightens him, and grieves him, then he must take some actions that can eliminate satan’s trick, as mentioned in the hadith:
First: spit three times on his left side.
Second: recite ta’awudh, by saying: A’udhu billahi minash-shaitanir rajim.
Third: If he is on his left side, then turns to the right. And if he is on the right, then turns to the left.
