Islam guides us to maintain our words. Because of its severe impact and its danger. Simple word may leads many sins. As it is the path to say something kufr, saying about Allah without knowledge, false testimony, lying, backbiting and gossip, and so on. So, don’t underestimate in the matter of words.
After the Prophet ﷺ teaches Mu’adh (may Allah blesses him) some of the Islam laws, the Prophet ﷺ says to him,
“Shall I not tell you what is the foundation of all that?”. I (Mu’adh) said, “Of course, O Prophet of Allah”. He took hold of his tongue and said, “Control this”. I said, “O Prophet of Allah, will we be held responsible for what we say with it?”. He said, “May your mother be bereft of you, O Mu’adh! Will the people be thrown into Hell on their faces or on their noses for anything other than the harvest of their tongues?” [at-Tirmidhi, al-Albani says that this hadith is saheeh].
So maintaining the tongue is the basic of the prosperity and the way to get safety from sin. So the Prophet ﷺ calls us to use it in the fields of good, dhikr (remembering Allah) and islah (striving kindness for others).
