Don’t Bring Badness, If You Can’t Bring Goodness

doing badness

Try be do always good and give benefits to people every time. And also always keep away from doing badness and harming people. But, if you can’t do good, at least you don’t do any harm to people.

Abu al-Layth as-Samarqandi reported that Yahya ibn Mu’adh (830–871 CE), may Allah blesses him, says:

إِنْ لَمْ تَنْفَعْهُ فَلَا تَضُرُّهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَسُرُّهُ فَلَا تَغُمُّهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَمْدَحْهُ فَلَا تَذُمَّهُ

“If you cannot benefit, then do not harm. If you cannot bring joy, then do not bring distress. If you cannot praise, then do not blame” [Tanbih al-Ghafilin, 1/165].

Because good morals consist of 2 things: giving kindness to others and refraining from disturbing others. If you can’t bring them together, at least you do the second one. Refraining yourself from harming people.
